Habsburg no Houken / Bolero
Well that was... interesting.

Habsburgs managed to do in one act what Taiou did in two. That is, completely waste its potential and be grandiose on the outside with not much happening on the inside.

And at least Taiou had a proper love triangle, which Habsburgs really did not. I can't believe Keiko-sensei had the material in her hands and yet didn't use it right. Chie's feelings toward Nene amounted to an entire one scene, her friendship with Kaname was barely played up at all... Really this was just The Chie Angst Show.

Which really wasn't so bad, to be completely honest. It's enjoyable to watch Chie be all dark and glowery and burning with inner passion. It's just that even the inner passion seemed to get lost after a while, and a whole play of Chie Angst is kind of hard to sit through when it could've had more.

Good points of Houken:

Chie's university friends and their cute curly hair topped with ridiculously cute mushroom-like hats (Rima-chan, Renta, Michael-chan, I am looking at you. Mickey was admittedly kind of hard to believe as a uni student. ;P)

Shiiran with her GLOVES and her SWORDFIGHTING and then being almost immediately reborn as an Austrian and then a Hungarian and oh, so much Shiiran-watching funtimes.

Michael-chan was also a cute cute cute messenger person.

Unimpressed by Makaze hanging around all the time in Fersen costumes doing a whole lot of nothing. Also unimpressed by Doi-chan in extremely bad facial hair and wigs. AND by how much time it took for Hayaya, Tomomin and Beni to show up.

Wait, this was supposed to be good points. Well, their entrance and the dance with the riding crops was fun. And Haya macking on MomoSari. And gypsies in general (Seara-chan ♥)

And the part with Mariya-chan and then everyone reprising the theme song was the only part of the show that gave me chills.

And... oh, bother, it annoys me that I can't think of anything else.

I understand that a lot had to be cut and changed from the original source material, but I don't really think reading Jen's summaries ruined me for this play. Since I can't say that my expectations were very high in the first place -- knowing that a one-act musical couldn't possibly contain all of the detail of a two-volume novel, not to mention the things that wouldn't stand up to Zukafication... It's just that at its core it felt like a whole lot of angst over nothing and so much wasted potential.

Bolero:

A pretty darned good show. The supposed love story that runs through the revue doesn't really seem to tie things together, but I'm not going to complain about...

* Doi-chan and Mariya-chan spending most of the show as dancing doves
* Junko-san and Nishiki-Love as drunken bums
* Hayaya molesting Nene on the floor
* Above number also includes musumeyaku in Spanish jackets and slacks
* Toyoko in hot pants (Tomomin in drag isn't bad either)
* Junko-san, Nishiki-Love and MikiChigu(?) as safari hunters
* This barefooted pair dance
* The rockin' number with the military outfits
* Above number includes musumeyaku also with military tops but leg-baring smexiness below + boots (Ooohhh, picture!)
* In general, really really really good treatment for MomoSari, Kotokoto and Hayaya
* Also, a lot of Shiiran and/or Rima-chan in the same numbers as Hayaya, I remember operaglass-ing Haya and Shiiran together at least once, and then Haya & Doi-chan in the tuxedo dance
* Nene's white dress that was pink on the inside which you sadly can't see in this picture or this one

So I'll ignore those badly-reinvented Nova Bossa Nova outfits and the accompanying song by the "young stars", and not wonder too deeply why Africa seems to mostly contain white suits and fedoras, and for god's sake costume department seriously, why those not-flattering-on-anyone gold outfits.

(This number was good too, I just wasn't watching those specific people at all. ^^;;;)

...That was my Houken / Bolero not-a-proper-review-at-all rambling. さすが, self. ^^;;;

She's supposed to be a (sexy) lion, I believe ;)

And yes, she does have a fair amount of stage time! Definitely more than Tomomin and Beni, in any case!

Also unimpressed by Doi-chan in extremely bad facial hair and wigs.

I feared this would be the case when I saw that she was playing a rabbi. :/

It's great that everyone hates it! Maybe I will do that thing I do where I like it just to be contrary! *holds out hope*

Because me, Cate and other Haya fans who'll back her up constitutes "everyone". ^^;;;

Maybe I will do that thing I do where I like it just to be contrary!

I think Jen is better at this than you are. ;)

Because me, Cate and other Haya fans who'll back her up constitutes "everyone".

It constitutes pretty much everyone whose opinion I care about. ;)

I think Jen is better at this than you are.

Anyone who says they liked Hanagumi's recent BeruBara and believes themselves has moved beyond contrary into delusional. ;) *runs fast*

I spontaneously fell in love with Toyoko all over again. XD XD

Sounds like will be a dvd where I'll watch the show once and then stick to watching the revue.

That's too bad that Habsburgs seems weak. I usually like Keiko-sensei's shows.

Does Mariya-chan actually get stuff to do this time? I worry that she's fallen out of the spotlight.

Basically no musumeyaku besides Nene gets anything very impressive in the play, but Mariya-chan's small part as Olga is touching.

The revue, I think, is a big send-off for Momoka Sari and Koto Marie, with hints of "and Mariya will be our next nibante musumeyaku".

Well, I almost want to get it just for the revue now!! And Toyoko in particular. ;)
Especially if she does have a fair amount of stage time (which I was worried about...) and that picture!! Aah! Toyoko. ♥

..and Chie, of course. And the others, hehe.

so much Shiiran-watching funtimes.

THE ONLY ONES YOU GET. D:

No one has any personality. It's not just that it's not a show that will make anyone's fans happy, there are no memorable characters when you come out. Which is usually one of the things Keiko-sensei (I've realised during this show that all the Japanese fans just call her Keiko-san BURNNN) is good at. Like the rest of the department in ParaPuri, like the band in My dear, roles that don't have all that much stage time / lines still manage to be awesome, distinct, memorable characters. Even the leads aren't memorable in this.

And like we were saying, it's not about anything. They took out all the politics. They took out all the romance. They took out all the war. They left in a lot of the religion, though?

ARGH THIS SHOW.

Also, I only just realised, but this is the third show out since this time last year where Tomomin's role has consisted mostly of "Marriage and kids are great :D"

OH MY GOD JULIE

JULIE

YOU KNOW HOW THEY COULD FIX THIS SHOW

TAKE THE WAKATE NUMBER FROM THE REVUE AND PUT IT RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE.

THAT WOULD BE ACTUALLY AMAZING.
Julie: wao hehewao_wao on January 3rd, 2010 04:01 am (UTC)
Ahahahahaha that made me laugh a lot this morning, thank you XDD <3333333 What is it that they're even saying? TOMAKE, TOMAKE, TOMA!?!

I've realised during this show that all the Japanese fans just call her Keiko-san BURNNN

Aw, come on Japanese fans, have some respect -- it's not easy being a female director in this company.

They took out all the politics. They took out all the romance. They took out all the war. They left in a lot of the religion, though?

Spot on. T_______T;;;

this is the third show out since this time last year where Tomomin's role has consisted mostly of "Marriage and kids are great :D"

Ahahaha a new way of being typecast XDDD

That's what Tomomin gets after being a homewrecker in Anna Karenina, I guess ;)

Bwahahaha, also spot on!! Darn homewreckers. :P
