Tsukigumi Pimpernel: Second Viewing
First of all I'd like to point out a couple of things that can be illustrated with pictures -- Masaki's errant strand of hair and Yurino's red nail polish. The strand of hair (strands, actually, I think there are two?) is apparently part of Masaki's Chauvelin image. It is such a cheap way to lure in fangirls, and I love it so much. As for Yurino's red nails, I don't think anything needs to be said ♥ ♥ ♥

Now on to my thoughts after the second viewing.

I'm glad report that Kiriyan is getting better in the "singing with emotion" category. I still thought there could've been more in "Prayer", but "She Was There" gave me goosebumps, no lie.

I can see what she's doing with her Percy, and I think a lot of it goes down well... But I maintain the right to like Touko's better overall.

I'm sad to report, however, that Masaki is apparently suffering so much vocally that they actually altered the music for her. She's taking lower notes instead of attempting the high ones that seem to be right in her break range.

Her husky voice is kind of sexy, but it just reminds me that she's pushing herself to the edge of her singing ability. :(

On the other hand, I'm completely in love with her characterization of Chauvelin. Love love LOVE. So much love that I'm pretty sure if I watched this show from the first floor my toes would curl in, and if I was anywhere in the first 10 rows I'd just melt in my seat.

I'm the saddest of all to report that Marimo today didn't come close to the Marguerite she showed us on shonichi. Far from it, in fact, she seemed to be turning into Typical Musumeyaku Heroine #13 or whatever. Voice inflection was all over the place. Lots of shrillness and semi-hysterics. Her singing was probably the same, but everything else made it seem a little worse.

Marimo, Marimo, Marimo, please do not do this. If you become that, being a parody of yourself / just another musumeyaku with an annoying voice, then I can't root for you anymore. That's why I'm going to blame this on some kind of ダメ出し, some criticism from Koike-sensei or something. That has to be it.

Sigh.

Well, on to more stuff that I liked. I seem to remember there was at least one person whom I completely forgot to mention in my first post... Oh! Rizu :D I know they ought to give her more proper male roles, but her Isabelle was like Madame Wolf all over again ♥ When she got displaced by Marguerite, she flounced offstage ♥ ♥

And Mishou Kazuki -- I've always wondered what it was about her, I mean she's gotten just enough promotion to have formed a proper club and everything but isn't really hugely star-tracked... And then they made her a Chauvelin lackey and I was like, "ooh :D ♥"

But not nearly as ♥ as I am about Shimon, who if you haven't figured out is largely the star of this show for me X3 Shimon is so perfect as a foppish aristocrat it's really TOO perfect, and needs about this many hearts ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ And her dancing ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ And her gayness ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ She loves it all WAY too much ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Also deserving of ♥ is Morie, whom I shamefully didn't mention much before except to say her singing was better than the underclassmen. Which is true. She's really solid, and I watched her more this time and her Dewhurst is very Determined but sweet with Miyako the girlfriend etc.

...And, um, I kind of love her as a washerwoman way more than I should >.> SHE IS AN ATTRACTIVE WOMAN, OKAY, I CAN'T HELP IT.

Whereas Magee's washerwoman is just designed to have the audience rolling in the aisles. She does her voice really screechy high and gosh it is SO funny.

On a related note, after the major jumprope fail the first two days they finally got it right today -- and were rewarded with major applause from all of the fans doing kumisouken X3

Other things that got fixed... Kiriyan undoing Masaki's sash... Oh, did I mention Karan-chan losing her hat on shonichi? It was fine today. Also, have I talked enough about how much I love Karan-chan "Man with Harp", and her Angry Peasant, and her dancing, etc? ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Sonoka's "Prince of Wales does ballet" routine continued into the "let's play pretend Pimpernel!" line in which I think she suggested the Pimpernel must also dance ballet. ;P

Small changes: when Prince Sonoka is all "anyone who knows about the Pimpernel! Come forward!" Everyone looks around questioningly for a moment and then sighs いな~い。 That line wasn't in there before. Also, in the duel Percy doesn't stab Chauvelin in the leg.

Kiriyan's portrait adlib was "gesturing upward to heaven" kind of pose. What was funnier than the pose itself was when Yurino scolded her and Kiriyan was all "ahh, kowai". ;P The costume adlib was "a track suit with stripes down the arms and legs and your name going across the chest" -- Manda figured she was describing the TMS "jersey", which I totally wouldn't have figured out.

I did figure out, however, that the Creation of Man costumes are slightly different. They're long and straight down the front instead of being cut like a frock coat at the waist. And they have more lace at the cuffs, and sparkles and lace around the pockets. I think I already mentioned the lace on their shoes... But the fabric itself is the same?

Um, I'm sure there was another costume thing I wanted to cover but I got distracted by the Asahi picture of the hideous bustle dresses (and Kiriyan's busy coat).

Speaking of the finale -- I was too zeroed in on specific people to notice the first time, and the new music threw me off, but the sword dance choreography is actually exactly the same. Except for the bit where they highlight various people, and the fact that Kiriyan doesn't do that cool leap that Chie did.

That leads me to the parade. Manda got it right and I'm just going to copy and paste from her...

Hazaki Mana
Shimon Yuriya ~ Asumi Rio ~ Akizuki Saya
Kouzuki Ruu ~ Kiryuu Sonoka ~ Uzuki Hayate
Seijou Kaito + Ayahoshi Rion
Touka Yurino + Aoki Izumi
Ryuu Masaki
Aono Yuki
Kiriya Hiromu

In my own defense, the reason I got it wrong was partly because I simply couldn't believe how messed up the placement seemed. I clearly remembered Mirio being in the middle of the first group, but I second-guessed myself.

In talking afterward Manda and I determined that this has to be the result of 1) character importance and 2) the fact that they couldn't put Mirio to the right or left of someone else. She had to come down in the center. Otherwise it could have been

Shimon ~ Toshi ~ Yuuki
Mirio ~ Sonoka ~ Ruu

--etc. But no. Mirio had to be in the center and Sonoka didn't get as much stage time as Magee and Morie, so she got pushed down embarrassingly low.

Still, then when you look at the ginkyou order it makes away more sense:

Hanase Mizuka ~ Touka Yurino ~ Seijou Kaito ~ Asumi Rio ~ Aono Yuki ~ Kiriya Hiromu ~ Ryuu Masaki ~ Kiryuu Sonoka ~ Aoki Izumi ~ Koshino Ryuu

That's a more accurate representation of Tsukigumi's hierarchy right now, I think.

I think that's a good place to stop, even though I'll probably remember some other anecdote about a random baby vitally important bit to be added to this or posted later. I'm definitely not done with this show.

So, Masaki sings the theme reprise by herself in the mini-revue? I wonder if that means when it's Mirio's turn she'll sing in the revue, and the parade order AND demachi order will all be switched? .... God, what a weird situation.

She sure does! But the program implies that it will be Mirio on the days that she plays Chauvelin. I couldn't tell you about demachi, but what a hassle for the fanclubs if they try to reflect the role-switch...

Weird situation, indeed.

Yeah, but to have the person last in the parade order next to the top star at demachi? It would be so weird....

I hope Marimo was having a bad day because if moving her to Tsukigumi means that they are going to make her play a "typical" musumeyaku then can we please have her back?
